MOTTLING OF TEETH CORRECTION

Are you worried about your “Blotchy/mottled teeth”. This condition is called as Fluorosis and presents itself as white/brown or yellowish streaks on the surface of the teeth. Fluorosis typically occurs when there is too much fluoride content in the water during the developmental stages of teeth.

There are many grades of Fluorosis and treatment varies according to the grade. Very mild grades are limited to few teeth and are hardly noticeable. Moderate to severe blotchy teeth require cosmetic management.

Porcelain veneers are commonly recommended in moderate to severe dental fluorosis cases for improved aesthetics and smile correction.

How is it fixed?
  • Dental Bonding
  • In this technique a small portion of the discoloured area is removed and refilled with a tooth-coloured filling material and polished for a glossy look. This is the easiest of the treatment options and cost effective. The procedure is painless and often completed in one visit.

  • Veneers
  • Dental Veneers are transparent shells of tooth coloured material that are pasted on the front surfaces of the mottled teeth. They can be made of porcelain for better aesthetic. However, this technique involves slightly more grinding of the natural surface of the teeth and are expensive. They are completed in 2 visits.

  • Teeth Whitening
  • Teeth whitening may help improve mild cases of Dental Fluorosis and reduce visible tooth discoloration. The effectiveness depends on the condition of the enamel surface and the number of affected teeth.

Mottling of teeth usually develops during the formation of permanent teeth due to excessive fluoride levels in drinking water or prolonged exposure to fluoridated toothpaste.

  • Although suggested as a treatment option, this works well only in mild cases of mottled teeth. Whitening causes the discolouration/streaking to become less conspicuous but does not totally make them disappear.

  • Treatment depends on how many affected teeth are involved and the extent of enamel changes. Dental Bonding is suitable for mild discoloration, Teeth Whitening may improve mild fluorosis cases, and Porcelain Veneers are commonly recommended in moderate to severe cases for smile enhancement.
