GINGIVAL DEPIGMENTATION

Just as we have our own unique skin tone, the gum also has its own tone. The pigment melanin is responsible for the colour of the gums.

People with darker gums have more melanin pigment in them. Here are some of the causes for gum darkening

  • Smoking
  • Certain Endocrine Disorders
  • Antibiotics (Minocycline), anti-malarial medicines
  • As a reaction to certain fillings (Silver), old metallic crowns
Treatment

Usually addressing the cause of the pigmentation is sufficient – for example if it is due to cigarette smoking, cessation of the habit can improve the gums, or changing the medications too. The dental treatment with Lasers involves using Laser beam to target the top layer of cells of the gums that contain the melanin pigment. With this layer gone, the pink gums underneath are revealed and most patients get satisfactory results.
